Understanding Search Engines

Search engines are websites that contain text, videos or images and collect them on the internet.

Through search engines, your business can also be easily accessed by visitors anywhere. How to use it is also very easy, just enter the keywords ( keywords ) on which you want to find, so the search engines will display some web pages relevant to the keywords you enter.

Does the search engine consist only of Google? Of course not, there are several other search engines you can use. For example Mozilla Firefox, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Naver, and others.

And every search engine has a different algorithm, so the search results that are displayed will also be different, even though you use the same keywords for each search engine.

Search Engine History

The first search engine was a program called Archie (show image) which appeared in 1990. Where the Archie program allows people to access and search the file name of a web page.

However, Archie could not open the website you were looking for, but immediately downloaded the file you were looking for. As technology has developed, various types of search engines have emerged with different features.

In 1998 Google emerged and became the most used search engine to date. Other search engines that are also quite widely used include, Mozilla Firefox, Bing (formerly MSN), Search, Yahoo, and Baidu).

How Search Engines Work

There are 3 main steps taken by search engines to display search results for users.

1. Crawling

Crawling is the stage of scanning and collecting every detailed website page, such as titles, images, keywords, internal links, and so on. Every crawler will collect different data.

Crawlers will also revisit web pages to see changes made to a website. And for web pages marked with " no index ", this means that the page signals Google bots not to index the page.

2. Indexing

Indexing is the stage where the data that has been crawled will then be processed and placed in the database . Search engines use this index as a source of information displayed on search results pages.

3. Retrieval and Ranking

Retrieval is the search engine stage when processing user requests and displaying search results according to those requests. Search engines have their own algorithms and ways of choosing which pages are most relevant to your query.

And each search engine, provides a ranking on each website that is displayed. Some are displayed on the first page of Google search, some are on the second page. It depends on the quality of SEO ( Search Engine Optimization ) for each website.
